I extend a giant hug to parents, spouses, children, relatives and friends who have suffered the loss of their loved ones on the battlefield. For I know that once our heroes are deployed, the uncertainty of their making it back home begins for all concerned. May you find comfort in the meaningful memories of your fallen heroes this day of remembrance!
Memorial Day also takes on a new meaning for those of us whose loved ones came home after deployment, only to find that exposure to lethal chemicals would eventually cause them to lose their lives. My Veteran, with whom I respectfully observed many Memorial days, is now one I honor on this day for his courageous service as a Medical Assistant exposed to Agent Orange on the DMZ! I am, of course, aware of the fact that I am only a speck among many who find themselves in this position.

My heart goes out to all Veterans of war who came home with obvious signs of the devastating effects of war, and to those whose once latent service-connected health issues, have now reared their ugly head in a mental or physical health battle they must now fight, with the help of caring relatives. You and your selfless caregivers also deserve to be recognized on this day!
In conclusion, I want to appeal to everyone reading this to understand that every day is Memorial Day for the surviving spouse, partner, or parent. Please attempt to acknowledge this by giving individuals in your circle a hug, a kind gesture of your choice, or render the forever valuable listening ear, on a day such as this.
